Scaling Lab

You're going to make 4 paper cylinders of increasingly smaller sizes. Then you'll put an index card on top of the cylinder, and load it with weight until it collapses.

1) get 4 pieces of scratch paper.

2) Measure one piece. Height _________ cm Width__________ cm

Make one of them into a cylinder and use a small piece of tape to hold it together.
Put an index card on it, and load it with weights until it fails.

Weight at failure __________ g

3) Cut another piece of paper so it's half as tall, & half as wide.

Height _________ cm Width__________ cm

4) Predict how much weight it will hold, based on your 1st cylinder ________________

5) Test it ! It actually held ____________ g.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6) Do this with another piece of paper half the size of the 2nd paper.

Height _________ cm Width__________ cm

7) Predict how much weight it will hold, based on your 1st & 2nd cylinder ________________

8) Test it ! It actually held ____________ g.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9) Do this with another piece of paper half the size of the 3rd paper.

Height _________ cm Width__________ cm

10) Predict how much weight it will hold, based on your 1st & 2nd & 3rd cylinder ________________

11) Test it ! It actually held ____________ g.

Analysis

b) Make a graph of area vs weight held. Describe the relationship you see in a sentence

c) Make a graph of weight of paper vs weight held. Describe the realtionship you see in a sentence

d) An insect is most like which test ?

e) Godzilla is most like which test ?

f) Why shouldn't we be afraid of Giant Land Crabs or huge ants eating our cities ?
