All objects
grow when they're scaled up, but they don't grow the same way
in every dimension.
Think about making a bird larger :
| Wing length |
Wing area |
Wing volume (mass) |
Atoms and molecules |
| 1 meter |
1 square meter |
1 cubic meter |
very small |
| 2 meters |
4 square meters |
8 cubic meters |
no change |
| 3 meters |
9 square meters |
27 cubic meters |
no change |
Not the same rates....
This symmetry rule is easy to understand
mathematically, and it speaks "volumes" to builders
and biologists.
For example, notice that creatures with skeletons on the outside,
like ants, while capable of prodigious feats of strength at certain
scales, are not at all common at larger scales.
